Fishing with Barry: Lessons on Commitment, Tools, and Community

Last week, I had the pleasure of going fishing with Barry Nalls. Barry is no novice when it comes to Cedar Creek Lake. Over the years, he has spent much time exploring its waters, often accompanied by experienced guides who have shared invaluable insights about the lake and the best spots to find fish. He exchanges tips with other fishermen on which lures work best for different types of fish. Barry has invested heavily in his passion, equipping himself with a top-notch boat, advanced fish-finding technology, and an impressive collection of rods, reels, and lures. In fact, his wife Kim humorously remarks that the fish might as well give up and jump directly into his boat!

As I reflected on our fishing trip, I was reminded of how Jesus called His first disciples to follow Him and become fishers of men. The parallels between fishing for fish and fishing for people are striking. Here are three key similarities that stood out to me:

1. Commitment:
Barry’s dedication to fishing is evident in the time and resources he has poured into it. Likewise, as believers, we must commit our time and resources to intentionally reach out to others with the message of Jesus. This commitment is the foundation of our mission.

2. The Right Tools:
Just as Barry uses specific tools to enhance his fishing, we, too, need the right tools to effectively share the good news of Jesus. This includes a solid understanding of the gospel and a few apologetics skills to answer questions. Most importantly, God has provided us with the essential tools: His Word and His Spirit.

3. Community:
Fishing is not just a solitary activity; it thrives on the exchange of tips, encouragement, and shared experiences among fishermen. Similarly, we need a community of committed disciples to encourage us, teach us, and celebrate with us. As a church, we can be that supportive community for one another.

Fishing with Barry was not just a fun outing; it was a reminder of the dedication, tools, and community we need to be effective fishers of men. Let’s commit ourselves, equip ourselves, and support one another in this important mission.
